I like to think that even if people are reading crap books, at least they are reading. There are books on the market however that seem to appeal mainly to mums and women who want to be their mums, usually involving a story about an abused child.. These come under the genre ‘Tragic Life’.

There are hundreds of these books around. I used to work in a bookshop and we sold more of these tragedy porn books than we did anything else. There’s something unnerving about that.

Now the books themselves deal with issues that are pretty rough, most people would have heard of Dave Pelzer’s book ‘A Child Called It’ that dealt with Pelzer’s childhood where he was abused by his mother for most of his young life before a teacher interfered. From there it opened up this whole new sub genre of memoirs which have flooded the market with tragic tales and to be honest, quite amusing titles, most of which are probably shared by some dodgy porn films(”When daddy comes home”, “Dance for your daddy” “Daddys little earner”).
